What is Horizontal Range in Projectile Motion?

Horizontal Range in Projectile Motion:

  1. The displacement in the horizontal direction is the projectile’s range.
  2. Because gravity only acts vertically, there is no acceleration in this direction.
  3. The range of the projectile, like the time of flight and maximum height, is determined by the initial speed.
The point O is called the point of projection; θ is the angle of projection and OB is the horizontal Range or Simply Range. The total time taken by the particle from reaching O to B is called the time of flight.

Formula for the projectile motion:

  1. The range of a projectile is the horizontal distance the projectile travels from the time it is launched to the time it comes back down to the same height at which it is launched.
  2. In a projectile motion, there is no horizontal acceleration at work. Therefore, the horizontal distance is determined by the initial velocity.
  3. Calculate the range of a projectile by using the formula given as,

R = u2sin2θ/g

Where, R is the horizontal range,

v is the initial velocity,

g is the acceleration due to gravity and

θ is the angle of the initial velocity from the horizontal plane (radians or degree).
